Like many of you, I didn’t know where 2020 would take us. By mid-March, along with many in our industry and the world at large, Life Happens was fully remote. There was uncertainty everywhere you looked. Internally, we wondered how this would affect our Life Lessons Scholarship program, which relies on sponsorships from companies and associations all over the industry.
For those unfamiliar, the Life Lessons Scholarship Program is for students who have lost a parent who had little to no life insurance. Students from all over the country apply with a 500-word essay or 3-minute video detailing how that loss affected, both financially and emotionally, their plans for higher education. It reminds us in this industry how important our work is – each life insurance policy you help secure is another family that won’t need our scholarship.
By early summer, sponsors all over the industry had signed on to donate their time and money and the program had hit its official fundraising goal. But the interest hadn’t slowed down. Suddenly, we were heading for a record number of scholarships to be awarded.
It is with great appreciation and amazement that I’m able to announce: The Life Lessons Scholarship Program officially awarded $351,000 to 48 students this year. This is an average increase of 50% over the past 4 years!
You can view all our winners’ stories here. I encourage you to check them out. These students are the future of our country and I think everyone would agree that our future looks bright in their hands. They have overcome intense challenges and hardships to achieve their dreams, and everyone at Life Happens is proud to play a small part in their journey.
